PERSONAL BACKGROUND
Maria Martinez is a respected drummer, percussionist, clinician and educator. Maria began her musical career playing in New Orleans French Quarter including Tipitina's and the Dream Palace as well as New Orleans Jazz Festival, Rivergate Convention Center and New Orleans Super Dome.

Martinez graduated and was the recipient of the 1982 ?Outstanding Player of the Year Award? from Musicians Institute. She taught at the Percussion Institute of Technology from 1982 – 2000 and was course leader of the Latin Drumming curriculum. Martinez taught classes in: Latin drumming, sight reading, live playing workshops, rhythm section workshops, open counseling and private lessons.


Martinez is a noted author of several important educational publications, including Rudimental Warm-Ups, Instant Guide to Drum Grooves (book/CD packages), Brazilian Coordination for Drumset, Afro-Cuban Coordination for Drumset (book/CD packages, DVD?s and Video?s), all published by Hal Leonard. Maria is a columnist for Modern Drummer and contributing author for, Percussive Notes, Drum Magazines, Latin Percussion Music Group Education, Drum Instructors Only Newsletters. She is co-founder and author of the World Beat Rhythms (WBR) Beyond the Drum Circle book/CD package series, WBR-Brazil, WBR-Africa and WBR–Cuba (Hal Leonard).


She has taught master classes, conducted clinics and played at events such as PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention), IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators), NAMM (National American Music Merchants), CMEA (The California Association for Music Education) and TCAP (The California Arts Project) and the Berklee School of Music World Percussion Festival among others.


Martinez pursues an active free-lance career performing and sharing both stage and studio with such artists as El Chicano, Rita Coolidge, Angela Bofill, Klymaxx, Emmanuel, Trini Lopez, Morris Albert, Peach, and the late Barry White, Nel Carter and Johnny Paycheck. Her television appearances include The Late Show, The Drew Carey Show, Dukes of Hazzard, Soul Train, Desde Hollywood (Univision) among others.
